Obverse: Nagari legend “रतलाम” (Ratlam) above a Katar (dagger), symbolizing the authority and martial heritage of the state.

Ranjit Singh ruled the princely state of Ratlam in Central India under British paramountcy during the 19th century. Ratlam, a relatively smaller state, maintained its own localized coinage system primarily for internal circulation. The use of Nagari script and indigenous symbols like the katar reflects strong regional identity and continuity of traditional Indian monetary practices, even under indirect British control. These coins played a vital role in facilitating everyday trade within the state’s economy.
