Description
Perunjinga Pallavas of Sendamangalam, Issuer: Tinnevelly (South India) 1228-1278 CE, Composition: Copper, Denomination: 1 Kasu, Weight 2.77 grams, Diameter 15mm, Obverse: Bull to Right, Moon above, Reverse: Standing king type of Chola origin, References Mitch WI# 355, about very fine, scarce.
The Perunjinga Pallavas of Sendamangalam ruled parts of South India, particularly in the Tinnevelly region, during the 13th century (1228–1278 CE). As minor chieftains and feudatories of the later Chola dynasty, they issued distinctive copper coinage like this 1 Kasu. The obverse features a sacred bull (Nandi) facing right with a crescent moon above—symbols of Shaivism, reflecting the dynasty’s religious affiliation. The reverse shows a standing king, inspired by Chola coinage, signifying continuity and allegiance to Chola sovereignty. These coins highlight the regional assertion of power and the cultural-religious influence of the Cholas during a period of political transition.
