This fractional bronze unit belongs to the early Pallava coinage of the Tirukoviloor region, dated broadly between the 4th and 6th centuries CE. The Pallavas, ruling from Kanchipuram, were among the most influential South Indian dynasties, playing a crucial role in the political and cultural consolidation of Tamilakam. Their early coinage reflects strong indigenous religious symbolism rather than portraiture.
The bull motif is traditionally associated with Shaivite influence, while the accompanying symbols — snake, Srivatsa, conch, and crescent — represent a syncretic blend of Shaivite and Vaishnavite elements, highlighting the pluralistic religious environment of the time. The reverse Dharma Chakra indicates continuity of pan-Indic sacred symbolism and possibly commercial legitimacy. Cast and struck in small fabric, such units were meant for local circulation and day-to-day trade.
