Description
Ahmednagar Sultanate, Murtada Nizam Shah II, (1600- 1610 CE), Denomination: 2/3 Falus, Composition: Copper, Weight: 8.32 grams, 17.03 mm, Reference: KM# 15.3, Very fine.
Obverse: Murtaza Zarb Ahmednagar.
Reverse: Fi Shuhur Sanah.
Issued under Murtaza Nizam Shah II, this copper 2/3 Falus belongs to the late phase of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate, when the state was struggling for survival against intense Mughal pressure. Although the coin is dated to 1600–1610 CE, this period represents Murtaza Nizam Shah II’s nominal reign, during which he functioned largely as a puppet ruler. Real political and military authority rested with the powerful regent and wazir Malik Ambar, who effectively governed the sultanate and organized resistance against the Mughals.
The obverse inscription “Murtaza Zarb Ahmednagar” formally asserts the sultan’s sovereignty and mint authority, while the reverse “Fi Shuhur Sanah” reflects standard Deccan dating conventions. Coins of this phase are important historical documents, as they preserve the royal titulature even when the sultan lacked real power. Such issues clearly illustrate how monetary authority continued in the ruler’s name, despite actual governance being exercised by a regent during this unstable, transitional phase of Deccan history.
