Muʿizz al-Din Muhammad ibn Sam, known as Muhammad Ghori, was a powerful ruler of the Ghurid Empire in Afghanistan. Born around 1149 AD, he was the son of Baha al-Din Sam and brother of Ghiyas al-Din Muhammad, the senior ruler of Ghor. Ghori invaded India several times, defeating Prithviraj Chauhan in the Second Battle of Tarain (1192 CE), which opened the path for Muslim rule in North India. He was a brave and visionary leader who laid the foundation of the Delhi Sultanate.
During his era, the great Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti also arrived in India. After Ghori conquered Ajmer, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti settled there and spread Sufi teachings among the people, promoting peace, faith, and humanity. Their times symbolized both military power and spiritual enlightenment.
Ghori issued coins in gold, silver, copper, and billon, imitating Indian styles to ease trade. His coins depicted a horseman and bore inscriptions in Devanagari and Persian, reflecting cultural harmony. His loyal slave Qutb-ud-Din Aibak later became the first Sultan of Delhi. Muhammad Ghori was assassinated in 1206 CE, and his mausoleum lies in Sohawa near Jhelum (Pakistan).
