Bhoja Deva was one of the most celebrated rulers of the Paramara dynasty, a powerful medieval Hindu kingdom that ruled the region of Malwa in central India. He ascended the throne around 1010 CE and ruled for several decades, establishing his capital Dhar as an important center of political authority, culture, and scholarship. King Bhoja gained lasting fame not only as a capable ruler but also as a scholar and patron of literature, architecture, and religious institutions.
The coinage attributed to Bhoja Deva reflects the regional monetary traditions of medieval northern and central India. Small denomination coins such as the billon jital circulated widely in everyday trade. The presence of the sacred Nandi bull with Trishul highlights the strong Shaivite religious symbolism, while the horse and rider design with the Sharada legend “Shri Samanta Deva” follows the well-known medieval bull-and-horseman coinage tradition that circulated widely across northern India during this period. These coins today represent an important numismatic record of the Paramara rule in Malwa during the 11th century CE.
