Description
Malwa Sultanate, Mahmud Shah I (AH 839-873/1436-1469 CE), Denomination: Jital, Composition: Billon, Obv: al-sultan al- adil ala al-dunya wa l din, Rev: Mahmud Khalji shah, 2.95 Gms, 15.73 mm, Reference: G&G M40, Very Fine, Rare.
Malwa Sultanate under Mahmud Shah I reached a high point of political stability and cultural growth during the mid-15th century. Mahmud Shah I, founder of the Khalji dynasty in Malwa, ruled from Mandu and consolidated control over central India after breaking from the weakening Delhi Sultanate. His reign is remembered for strong administration, military discipline, and patronage of architecture, learning, and Islamic institutions. Mandu emerged as a major political and cultural center, marked by monumental buildings and fortified defenses. The billon jital coinage of Mahmud Shah I reflects this consolidation of authority. Bearing clear Arabic honorific titles on the obverse and the ruler’s name on the reverse, these coins symbolized legitimacy, sovereignty, and standardized monetary control in Malwa’s regional economy.
