Description
Independent Kingdoms, Sikh Empire, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, (r. 1801-1839 CE), Denomination: 1 Paisa, Composition: Copper, Weight: 9.23 grams, Diameter: 20 mm, Amritsar Mint, Nanakshahi type, katar as a mint mark, Reference: KM # 7.6, very fine, very scarce .
Obverse: Gurmukhi legend within a simple circular border, accompanied by a stylized leaf motif, representing the Nanakshahi monetary tradition of the Sikh Empire.
Reverse: Gurmukhi legend with a prominent katar (dagger) symbol serving as the mint mark of Sri Amritsar, symbolizing Khalsa authority and the martial strength of the Sikh state.
This copper paisa belongs to the period of the Sikh Empire, established and consolidated under the leadership of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the early nineteenth century. Ranjit Singh unified the misls and created a powerful, secular state stretching from the Indus River to the Sutlej, with Lahore as its capital. His administration emphasized stability, military strength, and efficient revenue systems, which allowed regularized coinage to flourish.
The Amritsar Mint held special religious and political significance, as Amritsar was the spiritual heart of Sikhism. Coins of the Nanakshahi type symbolized sovereignty rooted in Sikh tradition rather than personal glorification of the ruler. The katar (dagger) mint mark reflects the martial ethos of the Khalsa and the empire’s emphasis on defense and authority. Copper paisa coins such as this were essential for everyday commerce, facilitating trade, taxation, and market transactions across Punjab. Today, these scarce issues are important numismatic witnesses to the administrative maturity and cultural identity of the Sikh Empire.
