Description
Leaf-shaped Cast Copper Coin, Post-Mauryan, Shunga Kingdom, (187-75 BCE), Denomination: Kakani or ¼ Unit, Composition: Copper, Obv: Elephant standing facing left, Rev: three arched hill with crescent, Weight: 2.77 grams, Diameter: 14 mm, Reference: Mitch AC# 4366, Very fine, Very Rare.
This leaf-shaped cast copper coin belongs to the post-Mauryan phase of early Indian numismatics, issued under the Shunga Kingdom (c. 187–75 BCE) after the decline of centralized Mauryan authority. The Shungas ruled large parts of northern and central India and are known for reviving Brahmanical traditions while allowing strong regional autonomy. This decentralization is clearly reflected in their coinage, which shows wide variation in shape, fabric, and symbols.
Leaf-shaped coins were locally cast rather than die-struck, indicating regional mints and semi-independent administration. The elephant on the obverse symbolizes royal power, strength, and continuity with earlier Mauryan imperial imagery, while the three-arched hill with crescent on the reverse is a common post-Mauryan motif, often associated with sacred landscapes, fertility, and cosmological beliefs. The small denomination, identified as Kakani or ¼ unit, suggests everyday circulation among common people for local trade. Such coins provide valuable evidence of economic continuity, regional artistry, and symbolic traditions during the Shunga period.
