Kanishka I (r. 127–150 AD), the greatest ruler of the Kushan Empire, was a legendary conqueror and patron of art, religion, and culture. Kanishka is celebrated for promoting Buddhism, yet his coinage reflects remarkable religious tolerance, depicting deities from Greek, Iranian, and Indian pantheons.
