The Kingdom of Sivaganga, also known as the Madura Kingdom, was a prominent Tamil kingdom in South India during the 18th century. Raja Sasivarnadeva (r. 1730–1750 AD) was one of its notable rulers who strengthened the regional administration and protected Sivaganga’s sovereignty against external invasions. The kingdom was culturally rich and deeply rooted in Hindu traditions, with temples playing a central role in society.
The coin issued under Raja Sasivarnadeva, a copper Kasu, beautifully reflects the kingdom’s devotion and artistry. The obverse depicts Lord Rama and Sita, symbolizing dharma and divine virtue, while the reverse shows a garlanded Shivalinga, representing the kingdom’s spiritual connection to Lord Shiva. These motifs highlight the ruler’s devotion to both Vaishnavite and Shaivite traditions. Such coins not only served as currency but also as tokens of faith and royal legitimacy, making them highly valuable to historians and collectors today.
