Obverse: Schematized bust right — rendered in highly stylized Sasanian manner, where the oval form represents the eye, with simplified lips below and ear indicated behind; portrait partially worn on this specimen.

Reverse: Fire altar with three pellet flames, enclosed within a circular border; around the altar appears the Brahmi legend “Śrī Paramjeta.”

Chach of Aror was the most significant pre-Islamic ruler of Sindh, rising from a Brahman minister to sovereign after overthrowing the Rai dynasty. His reign marks a crucial transitional phase in early medieval Sindh, where indigenous Indian political traditions coexisted with strong Sasanian cultural and numismatic influence from Persia. The coinage of Chach consciously imitates late Sasanian silver, reflecting Sindh’s position as a commercial bridge between the Iranian world and the Indian subcontinent. These coins circulated widely along the Indus trade network shortly before the Arab conquest under Muhammad bin Qasim in 712 CE.

This hemidrachm belongs to a distinctive Indo-Sasanian series of Sindh, blending Persian iconography (fire altar, bust style) with local Brahmi inscriptions asserting royal legitimacy (“Śrī Paramjeta”). The schematic portrait and simplified altar are hallmarks of Sindh regional mints and are highly valued by specialists in early medieval South Asian numismatics.
