Sangramaraja, ruler of Kashmir from 1003 to 1028 CE, belonged to the Lohara Dynasty, which emerged after the decline of the Hunnic powers in the region. His reign is noted for resisting external invasions, especially repeated campaigns by Mahmud of Ghazni. Though Mahmud’s generals attempted to penetrate Kashmir’s mountain strongholds, Sangramaraja’s forces successfully defended the kingdom, preserving its autonomy. The period saw a continuation of Kashmiri artistic and cultural traditions, reflected in the stylized imagery on contemporary coinage. This AE stater, showing a seated goddess on the obverse and a standing king on the reverse, symbolizes royal authority and divine protection.
