Jalal ud-Din Firuz Khalji was the founder and first Sultan of the Khalji dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. Originally a senior military commander under the Mamluks, he was known for his age, experience, and unusually mild temperament in an otherwise violent period of medieval Indian politics.
Jalal ud-Din successfully defended the Sultanate against Mongol incursions on the north-western frontier and is remembered for preferring diplomacy and clemency over mass slaughter, even pardoning captured Mongols. In 1290 CE, after defeating the last effective Mamluk ruler, Muiz ud-Din Qaiqabad, he ascended the throne and established Khalji rule at Delhi. His father’s name is not clearly recorded in contemporary chronicles; his son was Arkali Khan, while his daughter was married to his ambitious nephew and son-in-law Alauddin Khalji.
In 1296 CE, Jalal ud-Din was treacherously assassinated by Alauddin Khalji, who then seized power. Jalal ud-Din’s tomb is located at Kilokhri, Delhi. During his reign, gold, silver, billon, and copper coinage was issued. Delhi remained the capital, and his authority extended across northern India, from Punjab to Bengal.
