Apollodotus II (r. 80–65 BCE) was one of the later Indo-Greek kings who ruled parts of northwestern India and eastern Afghanistan. His kingdom likely included regions of Gandhara and the Punjab. He continued the Hellenistic traditions established by earlier Greek rulers, promoting a blend of Greek and Indian cultures. Apollodotus II maintained a strong and prosperous rule, defending his territories against Indo-Scythian invasions and supporting trade and cultural exchange along the ancient trade routes. His reign marked one of the final phases of Greek power in the Indian subcontinent before the rise of Indo-Scythian dominance.
Apollodotus II’s coinage reflects the fusion of Greek and Indian artistry. His silver drachms feature Greek legends and the king’s portrait on the obverse, symbolizing Hellenistic royal identity, while the reverse bears Kharoshthi inscriptions and depictions of Athena Alkidemos, representing divine protection and strength. These coins showcase bilingualism and cultural synthesis unique to Indo-Greek rule.
