During the early nineteenth century, the Danish possessions in India were administered under the authority of Frederick VI, whose name appears anglicized as Frederick IV on Indo-Danish coinage. Danish India was centered at Tranquebar (Tharangambadi) on the Coromandel Coast, functioning primarily as a trading settlement rather than a territorial empire. By this period, Danish influence in India was declining due to British dominance and reduced commercial power. Copper coins such as the 4 Cash were struck locally to facilitate small everyday transactions within the settlement and nearby regions. The crowned “R” monogram reflects royal authority, while the reverse legend “IV KAS” denotes the denomination in the local monetary system. Coins dated 1839 represent the final phase of Danish rule in India, shortly before Tranquebar was sold to the British in 1845.
