Description
Katoch Rulers of Kangra, Apura Chandra Deva, (1340-1351 CE), Denomination: Jital, Composition: Copper, Obv: Devanagari legends in 3 Lines, Rev: Crude Horseman, 3.49 grams, 13.64 mm. Extremely fine, Scarce.
Apura Chandra Deva ruled the Kangra region during the mid-14th century, a period marked by political fragmentation and constant pressure from neighboring hill states and the Delhi Sultanate’s declining influence in North India. Belonging to the ancient Katoch dynasty, Apura Chandra Deva continued the long tradition of local autonomy centered around the Kangra fort and its surrounding territories. His reign reflects a phase when regional rulers relied heavily on traditional monetary systems to sustain administration, military upkeep, and local trade. The copper jital issued in his name follows established north Indian coinage conventions, emphasizing continuity rather than innovation. The Devanagari legends assert royal authority, while the crude horseman type symbolizes martial power and kingship. Such coins illustrate the resilience of hill principalities during a turbulent medieval era.
