Part of the short-lived Portuguese Indian escudo system introduced in 1958, this 60 Centavos nickel brass coin served as a regular circulation denomination in the colonies of Goa, Daman, and Diu. The escudo replaced the older Rupia at a fixed rate, and coins like this reflected both colonial administration and local commerce under Portuguese authority. Struck in Lisbon at the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda, these coins remained in use until demonetization in 1962 after India’s annexation of Portuguese territories. Today, 60 Centavos issues are collected for their unique fractional denomination and colonial historical context.
