Ghiyath al-Din Balban (reigned 1266–1287 AD) was one of the most powerful rulers of the Delhi Sultanate’s Mamluk (Slave) Dynasty. Originally a Turkish slave, he rose through ranks due to his intelligence, discipline, and loyalty. As Sultan, Balban strengthened the central authority, introduced strict court discipline, and emphasized the divine right of kingship. He suppressed rebellions, curbed the power of nobles (Chahalgani), and maintained internal peace through a strong intelligence system. His reign marked the consolidation of the Delhi Sultanate, emphasizing order, justice, and absolute monarchy. Balban’s rule laid the foundation for future strong centralized governance in India.
