Sher Shah Suri (Farid al-Din Sher Shah Suri, r. 1538–1545 AD) was one of the greatest rulers of medieval India and founder of the Sur Empire. Originally serving under the Mughals, he rose through merit and later defeated Humayun to establish his own rule. Sher Shah introduced a strong administrative and monetary system—issuing gold, silver, and copper coins, and famously introducing the “Rupiya,” which became the standard Indian currency for centuries. His reign brought remarkable reforms in governance, trade, and infrastructure, most notably the construction of the Grand Trunk Road, connecting Bengal to the northwestern frontier. Gwalior was among his important mints. His splendid mausoleum at Sasaram, Bihar, stands as a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture and a symbol of his visionary rule.
