Description
Nawab of Bengal, Mir Jafar, Year: AH 1167–1173 / 1755–1761 CE, Azimabad (Patna) mint, Denomination: AR Rupee, Composition: Silver, Issued in AH 1172 / RY 6 (in the name of Alamgir II), Struck at Azimabad then under the control of the nominal Nawab of Bengal, Trident (Trishula) mint mark on Reverse, Weight: 11.47 grams, Diameter: 20 mm, Reference: KM # 460.5, very fine, scarce.
Obverse: badshah ghazi alamgir II, hijri year 1172 AH
Reverse: sana julus 6, zarb Azimabad and trident mint mark
This coin belongs to the period of Syed Mir Jafar Ali Khan Bahadur, who occupied the masnad of Bengal following the Battle of Plassey in 1757 with decisive backing from the British East India Company. By the time of AH 1172 / RY 6, Mir Jafar’s authority had already been reduced to a largely nominal position, while real political and military control rested firmly with the Company.
Although coinage continued to be struck in the name of the Mughal emperor Alamgir II, imperial sovereignty in Bengal had become purely symbolic. Mir Jafar functioned under the dominance of Robert Clive, marking the consolidation of British power in eastern India. The Azimabad (Patna) mint—then administratively linked to Bengal—issued rupees bearing the distinctive trident (trishula) mint mark, generally understood as a local or regional mint symbol. Rupees of AH 1172 / RY 6 with this mark are historically significant and considered scarce, reflecting the transitional phase from Mughal–Nawabi authority to effective Company rule.
