This coin belongs to the period of Syed Mir Jafar Ali Khan Bahadur, who assumed the masnad of Bengal after the Battle of Plassey in 1757 with decisive support from the British East India Company. After Plassey, Bengal entered a dual system of governance, where real power rested with the Company while the Nawab remained largely a nominal or “puppet” ruler. Mir Jafar ruled under the shadow of Robert Clive, marking the beginning of effective British dominance in Bengal. Although coins continued to be issued in the name of the Mughal emperor Alamgir II, imperial authority in Bengal was purely symbolic. The Azimabad (Patna) mint, then under Bengal’s control, struck rupees bearing the distinctive trident (trishula) mint mark—often interpreted as a local mint identifier and a regional emblem—making such issues historically important and scarce today.
