Description
Delhi Sultanate, Sultan Muhammad bin Tughluq, (AH 725–752 / 1325–1351 CE), Denomination: 1 Tanka, Composition: Bronze, Delhi mint, Obv: Persian legend bearing the name and titles of Sultan Muhammad bin Tughluq, Rev: inscriptional design with mint and date in Arabic-Persian script, Weight: 9.28 grams, Diameter: 20 mm, Reference: G&G# D403, Fine+, Scarce.
Muhammad bin Tughluq ruled the Delhi Sultanate from 1325 to 1351 CE and remains one of the most complex rulers of medieval India. The son of Ghiyas ud din Tughluq, he inherited a vast empire extending across northern India and parts of the Deccan. Highly educated and intellectually curious, Muhammad bin Tughluq introduced several ambitious administrative and economic reforms. His policies included the attempted transfer of the capital from Delhi to Daulatabad and the introduction of base-metal token currency intended to circulate alongside silver coinage. While innovative in concept, these measures created serious economic difficulties and administrative challenges.
Despite these controversies, Muhammad bin Tughluq maintained strong military control and attempted to expand the political reach of the Sultanate. The coinage of his reign reflects this dynamic period, with numerous experimental issues and inscriptional designs produced at important mints such as Delhi.
Bronze tankas like this example dated AH 732 (1332 CE) represent the monetary experiments of the early Tughluq dynasty. Struck by hammering and bearing clear Persian inscriptions of the Sultan’s titles, these coins illustrate the evolving Islamic numismatic tradition in India during the 14th century and remain historically important pieces from the Delhi Sultanate period.
