The Shunga Kingdom emerged after the decline of the Mauryan Empire, founded by Pushyamitra Shunga around 187 BC. The dynasty is known for restoring Brahmanical traditions, strengthening regional powers, and defending northern India against Indo-Greek incursions. Under the Shungas, art and religion flourished, including early developments linked with the Bharhut and Sanchi sculptural traditions. Their rule marked a transition period in ancient India, with smaller kingdoms asserting autonomy while maintaining vibrant cultural growth.
