Ghiyath al-Din Azam Shah (reign: AH 792–813 / 1389–1410 AD) was a notable ruler of the Bengal Sultanate and son of Sultan Sikandar Shah. Known for his patronage of literature and diplomacy with China’s Ming dynasty, he maintained Bengal’s independence and cultural vibrancy. His silver Tankas, like this one minted at Hadrat Firuzabad, are admired for their elegant Arabic inscriptions and fine calligraphy. The obverse glorifies his rule with divine support, while the reverse affirms his role as a protector of Islam. Coins from his reign are scarce, especially in good condition, and reflect both political authority and Islamic devotion.
