“This coin is a Safdar Jung silver Rupee struck at the Kora Mint in AH 1161 (Ahad regnal year), in near-uncirculated condition with attractive natural toning and original luster, making it a beautifully preserved and highly desirable piece for discerning numismatists”
Safdar Jung (full name Mirza Muqim Abul Mansur Khan Safdar Jung) was one of the most powerful nobles of late Mughal India. He became Nawab of Awadh in 1739 CE after succeeding his uncle Saadat Khan Burhan-ul-Mulk, and was later appointed Grand Wazir (Prime Minister) of the Mughal Empire in 1748 CE by Emperor Ahmad Shah Bahadur. From this point onward, Safdar Jung exercised near-autonomous authority over Awadh, while the Mughal emperor remained largely a symbolic figure whose name appeared on the coinage only for legitimacy.
Safdar Jung brought Kora (in present-day Prayagraj region) under his effective control around the early 1750s, using it as an important provincial mint. During his rule (AH 1161–1166 / 1748–1754 CE), silver Rupees were struck at the Kora Mint in the name of Ahmad Shah Bahadur, with the regnal year (Ahad RY) noted on the reverse. These coins reflect Awadh’s growing independence, strong administration, and flourishing regional economy before Safdar Jung’s death in 1754 CE.
