Aurangzeb Alamgir (r. 1658–1707 AD) was the sixth Mughal emperor and one of the most powerful rulers of the dynasty. Known for his military conquests and expansionist policies, he extended Mughal rule to its greatest territorial extent, covering most of the Indian subcontinent. A devout Muslim, Aurangzeb implemented strict Islamic laws and reversed many liberal policies of his predecessors. His reign marked the peak of Mughal power but also sowed the seeds of decline due to continuous warfare, religious intolerance, and administrative strain. Coins from his reign, like this silver rupee from the Surat mint dated AH 1095, are highly collectible.
