Description
Abbasid Caliphate, Al-Mahdi, (Arab–Bukharan Issue), AH 146–155 / 763–772 CE, Denomination: 1 Drachm, Composition: Silver, Weight: 2.83 grm, Diameter: 24.71 mm, Bukhara mint, References: Zeno Cat. 313069; Album Islamic #94, (Three Dots Variety), Very Fine, Extremely Rare.
Obverse: Crowned bust of ruler facing right, crescent with a dot above the crown. In front of the face appears the Sogdian legend “King of Bukhara”; behind the head the Arabic inscription “al-Mahdi”. Below the bust are three dots, indicating the known variety.
Reverse: Central fire altar surmounted by the head of Ahura Mazda to the right. Flanking the altar stand two mobeds (attendants) in traditional priestly posture; all combined in a bold, well-struck Sogdian-Zoroastrian style.
During the early Abbasid period, Bukhara remained a culturally diverse frontier zone where Arab authority interacted with long-standing Sogdian and Zoroastrian traditions. Under the caliphate of Al-Mahdi (AH 146–169 / 763–785 CE), local governors continued issuing silver drachms that preserved the familiar pre-Islamic Bukharan fabric while incorporating Islamic elements. These hybrid coins reflect a transitional era: the crowned bust and fire-altar imagery show the enduring prestige of Sasanian–Sogdian iconography, while Arabic inscriptions assert Abbasid sovereignty. The rare “three-dots variety” marks a distinct early phase of monetary integration, symbolizing Bukhara’s gradual shift from Iranian–Zoroastrian to fully Islamic coinage traditions.
