Obverse: Coat of Arms of the East India Company, featuring two lions as supporters holding a shield, with St. George’s Cross on the crest and flags. Below the coat of arms appears the date “1858” and the Latin legend “AUSPICIO REGIS ET SENATUS ANGLIAE”.
Reverse: Denomination “ONE QUARTER ANNA” in English and “یک پائی” in Persian, enclosed within a laurel wreath, with “EAST INDIA COMPANY” around the upper rim.
The period between 1857 and 1858 marked one of the most significant turning points in Indian history. In 1857, a major uprising, known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857, erupted against the rule of the British East India Company. Beginning with Indian soldiers (sepoys), the revolt spread across northern and central India, involving rulers, landlords and ordinary people who opposed British policies and interference. Although the uprising was eventually suppressed, it severely weakened the Company’s authority. In 1858, the British Parliament passed the Government of India Act, transferring control of India from the East India Company directly to the British Crown. Queen Victoria became the sovereign ruler of British India, ushering in a new era of direct British imperial administration.
Coinage Note: The 1858 Quarter Anna was minting in Birmingham, England, by two private minting establishments: Heaton and Sons (The Mint Birmingham) and James Watt & Co., Smethwick. Two distinctive reverse varieties are known, identified by the arrangement of the laurel leaves at the top of the wreath. KM# 463.1 features a single leaf on each side of the upper wreath, associated with James Watt & Co., while KM# 463.2 features double leaves on each side, associated with Heaton and Sons. The coin has a plain edge and was struck in copper. Its bilingual English and Persian inscriptions reflect the monetary traditions of British India during the final years of East India Company rule.
