Sultan Mehmed V Reşad ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1909 to 1918 during a period of major political and military change. He succeeded Abdul Hamid II following the Young Turk Revolution and the restoration of constitutional government. His reign witnessed the Italo-Turkish War, the Balkan Wars, and the Ottoman Empire’s entry into the First World War in 1914 alongside the Central Powers. Although Mehmed V was the reigning sultan, much political and military authority rested with the Ottoman government and its leadership. His reign marked the final decade of the empire before its post-war dissolution.

Coinage Note: This silver 2 Kurus was minted in Constantinople in AH 1327 (1909 CE), during the second regnal year of Mehmed V. Composed of .830 fine silver, the coin features the Sultan’s distinctive Tughra and a decorative star-bordered inscription. The 2 Kurus formed part of the Ottoman monetary system based on the Kurus and Lira, serving everyday commercial transactions during the empire’s late period.
