Description

British India, Queen Victoria, Reign: 1837–1901 CE, Years of Minting: 1885–1901 CE, Denomination: ½ Pice, Metal: Copper, Weight: 3.15 grams, Diameter: 21 mm, Reference: KM# 484, Mint: Calcutta, Very Fine, Collectable.

Obverse: Crowned portrait of Queen Victoria facing left; divided legend “VICTORIA EMPRESS” around, with a toothed rim. The portrait was engraved by William Wyon.
Reverse: “½ PICE INDIA” and date within a central beaded circle, surrounded by an ornate intertwined leafy wreath and toothed rim.
Issued during the reign of Queen Victoria following her assumption of the title Empress of India in 1876, the ½ Pice formed one of the smallest denominations of British India’s monetary system and was intended for everyday low-value transactions. Struck between 1885 to 1901, these copper coins circulated widely among the population and were commonly used in local markets and small purchases. The denomination was valued at 1⁄128 of a Rupee, making it particularly useful for minor transactions. This type was struck at the Calcutta (Kolkata) Mint and features the distinctive crowned portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse, while the reverse combines the denomination and date with an elaborate ornamental wreath. Issued during a period of expanding trade, railways, administration, and economic activity across the Indian subcontinent, the coin represents the mature phase of the British Raj under Queen Victoria. Today, the Victoria ½ Pice remains a popular collectible and an important relic of colonial India’s monetary history.
Coinage Note: This type was minted at the Calcutta (Kolkata) Mint. The recorded weight varies approximately from 2.95–3.35 grams and the diameter from 20.1–21.3 mm. This example shown bears the characteristic “½ PICE INDIA & Year” reverse surrounded by the ornate intertwined leafy wreath.
