Muhammad bin Tughluq, who ruled the Delhi Sultanate from 1325–1351 CE, was one of the most ambitious, learned, and experimental rulers of medieval India. His reign witnessed numerous bold administrative, military, and economic experiments. His monetary reforms were particularly remarkable. Muhammad bin Tughluq introduced several new denominations and experimented with different metals and weights. Most famously, he attempted to replace precious-metal coinage, including gold and silver currency, with token money made primarily of copper and brass, assigning it a value similar to higher-value coins. Although innovative, the experiment failed because counterfeit coins were produced on a large scale, causing serious economic problems. His coinage therefore provides an important insight into his unconventional approach to monetary policy. Alongside currency reforms, he experimented with shifting the capital from Delhi to Daulatabad, agricultural taxation, and military campaigns. His reign remains one of the most fascinating and controversial periods in the history of the Delhi Sultanate.
