Description
Bahmani Sultanate, Shamsuddin Muhammad Shah III, (AH 867–887 / 1463–1482 AD), Denomination: 1 Gani, Metal: Copper, Weight: 16.09 grams, Diameter: 21 mm, References: Mitch WI# 2854, GG# BH114, Grade: Extremely Fine, Scarce.

Obverse: Arabic legend “Al-Mu’tasim Billah (Abu’l Muzaffar) Shams al-Dunya wa’l-Din” arranged in bold calligraphic style across the field, proclaiming the Sultan’s honorific titles and emphasizing his divine legitimacy and sovereign authority.

Reverse: Arabic legend “Muhammad Shah bin Humayun Shah al-Sultan, Khallada Mulkahu” in elegant multi-line calligraphy, identifying the ruler by name and lineage, followed by the pious invocation “May his kingdom endure forever,” reflecting the religious and royal traditions of the Bahmani Sultanate.
Issued during the reign of Muhammad Shah III, this copper 1 Gani represents the coinage of the Bahmani Sultanate, one of the most powerful Islamic kingdoms of the Deccan. The coin bears only elegant Arabic inscriptions without pictorial designs, a characteristic feature of Bahmani numismatics. The carefully executed calligraphy reflects the Sultanate’s Persian-Islamic artistic influence while emphasizing royal authority, religious devotion, and dynastic legitimacy. These copper Gani coins served as an important medium of everyday commerce throughout the Deccan during the late 15th century.
Coinage Note: The Muhammad Shah III Copper Gani is a classic Bahmani issue renowned for its bold Arabic calligraphy and historical importance. Its inscription-only design and association with one of the last powerful Bahmani rulers make it a highly collectible coin among enthusiasts of Deccan Sultanate and medieval Indian numismatics.
