The Tomara rulers of Gwalior governed one of the most influential Rajput kingdoms of late medieval northern India. During the fifteenth century, Gwalior emerged as a major political, military, and cultural center under the Tomaras, whose strategic fortress commanded important trade and communication routes across central India. Although the dynasty was Hindu, its coinage frequently employed Arabic and Persian inscriptions in accordance with the established monetary traditions of the Delhi Sultanate, ensuring wider commercial acceptance throughout the region. Many of these issues remain unattributed to individual rulers due to the absence of explicit royal names, yet they provide valuable evidence of the independent monetary system maintained by the Tomaras before the conquest of Gwalior by the Delhi Sultanate under Sikandar Lodi in 1516 CE.
