The ancient region of Saurashtra, corresponding to present-day Gujarat, developed a distinctive local coinage tradition during the post-Mauryan period. Among its most recognizable issues are the so-called Swastika Copper coins, which were struck between approximately 100 and 50 BCE and circulated widely across western India. These pieces belong to a time when regional powers and Janapadas exercised considerable autonomy following the decline of the Mauryan Empire. Their iconography reflects indigenous religious traditions, with the obverse commonly depicting a standing figure identified by some scholars as Mahakala (Shiva), while the reverse bears the auspicious Swastika symbol associated with prosperity and well-being. The square fabric and punch-marked style reveal continuity with earlier Indian monetary traditions, although the designs became increasingly regional in character. Such coins played an important role in local commerce and testify to the economic vitality of ancient Saurashtra, a region renowned for its maritime trade and cultural connections.
Coinage Note: Saurashtra Swastika copper coins are classified among the regional post-Mauryan issues of western India. Their weights vary considerably, ranging from fractional pieces to larger units exceeding 7 grams. Well-preserved examples are scarce and are highly sought after by collectors of ancient Indian coinage.
