The middle decades of the third century CE saw the Western Satrap kingdom recover much of its strength under Mahakshatrapa Vijayasena, one of the most prominent rulers of the later dynasty. The son of Damasena, Vijayasena succeeded in restoring stability after a period of dynastic struggles and maintained the authority of the Kshaharata line across Gujarat, Kathiawar, and Malwa. His silver drachms continued the traditional portrait and chaitya design that had characterized Western Satrap coinage for generations, reflecting both political continuity and regional identity. Contemporary trade routes connecting western India with the Arabian Sea remained active, contributing to the prosperity of the kingdom. The numerous and well-struck issues of Vijayasena, extensively studied by Edward Rapson and later numismatists, provide valuable evidence for reconstructing the chronology of the Western Satraps. Today, his coinage represents one of the finest and most historically significant series of the late Indo-Scythian rulers.
Coinage Note: The reverse Brahmi legend identifies Vijayasena as the son of Mahakshatrapa Damasena. His silver drachms are catalogued in Plate XIV (Nos. 488–494) of Edward Rapson’s Catalogue of Indian Coins in the British Museum, making them important reference pieces for the study of Western Satrap chronology and typology.
