Obverse: Crowned bust of Queen Victoria facing left; legend around.
Reverse: “1/12 ANNA INDIA” and date within beaded circle and ornamental wreath.
Issued during the reign of Queen Victoria after her assumption of the title Empress of India in 1876, the 1⁄12 Anna copper coin formed the smallest denomination of British India’s currency system and was intended for everyday transactions. Struck between 1877 and 1901, these coins circulated widely among the common population and were frequently used in local markets and small purchases. The coin was produced at both the Calcutta (Kolkata) Mint and the Bombay (Mumbai) Mint, each exhibiting minor differences that allow collectors to distinguish their origin. The simple yet elegant wreath design and compact size made the denomination practical for circulation throughout the Indian subcontinent. Issued during a period marked by expanding railways, trade, and administrative reforms, the coin reflects the mature phase of the British Raj under Queen Victoria. Today, the Victoria 1⁄12 Anna remains a popular collectible and an important relic of colonial India’s monetary history.
Coinage Note: This type was struck at the Calcutta (Kolkata) and Bombay (Mumbai) Mints. Bombay Mint examples can be identified by 4½ dress panels with the letter “S” close to the dress, while Calcutta Mint coins show 4 panels with the “S” positioned farther away.
