Issued during the reign of Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia, this Quarter Anna copper coin represents the coinage of the princely state of Gwalior under British paramountcy. Madho Rao Scindia was one of the most prominent rulers of the Scindia dynasty and oversaw a period of administrative modernization and economic development within the state. Struck in Vikram Samvat 1974 (1917 CE), the coin circulated locally alongside British Indian currency and facilitated everyday transactions within the territories of Gwalior. The portrait of the Maharaja on the obverse emphasized the sovereignty and prestige of the ruling house, while the reverse featured the state emblem and denomination in Devanagari script, reflecting indigenous traditions. Gwalior was among the largest and most influential princely states in India, maintaining its own military, administration, and coinage while remaining under British suzerainty. Today, these copper issues are valued by collectors for their historical significance and their connection to one of the most distinguished princely dynasties of India.
Coinage Note: The copper Quarter Anna issues of Gwalior were struck according to the Vikram Samvat calendar and circulated concurrently with British Indian coinage. They remain important examples of the autonomous monetary systems maintained by Indian princely states.
