Description
Gupta Empire, Mahendraditya Kumaragupta I, Reign: 415–455 CE, Denomination: 1 Drachm, Metal: Silver, Weight: 1.81 grams, Diameter: 12 mm, Reference: Numista N# 68091, About Very Fine, Rare.
Obverse: Bust of King Kumaragupta I facing right, rendered in the characteristic Western Kshatrapa-inspired style adopted by Gupta silver coinage. Brahmi legends appear around the portrait.
Reverse: Stylized Garuda standing facing with wings spread, surrounded by a Brahmi legend reading “Paramabhāgavata Rajadhiraja Sri Kumaragupta Mahendraditya” (“The Supreme Devotee of Bhagavan, King of Kings, Shri Kumaragupta Mahendraditya”).
Issued during the reign of Kumaragupta I, one of the most powerful rulers of the Gupta Empire, this silver drachm belongs to the golden age of ancient Indian civilization. Kumaragupta inherited a vast and prosperous empire that extended across much of northern and central India, maintaining political stability, economic growth, and cultural achievement for several decades. The silver drachms of the Gupta Empire were primarily struck for circulation in western India, where the monetary traditions of the earlier Western Kshatrapas remained influential. As a result, Gupta rulers retained certain regional design elements while incorporating their own imperial titles and religious symbolism. The reverse Garuda, the sacred mount of Vishnu, reflects the Gupta dynasty’s strong Vaishnavite affiliations and serves as a symbol of royal authority and divine protection. These coins circulated widely throughout the empire’s commercial centers and trade routes, demonstrating the sophistication of Gupta administration and monetary policy. Today, Kumaragupta’s silver drachms are highly regarded by collectors as important artifacts of India’s classical age and the remarkable prosperity of the Gupta Empire.
Coinage Note: Gupta silver drachms were modeled on the coinage of the Western Kshatrapas but gradually evolved into a distinctly Gupta style. The Garuda reverse became one of the most recognizable symbols of Gupta numismatics and remains an enduring emblem of the dynasty’s imperial and religious identity.
