Issued during the reign of King George VI, the ½ Pice bronze coin formed part of the final generation of regular circulation coinage produced under British rule in India before independence. Introduced in 1938, this small denomination was widely used for everyday transactions among ordinary people, particularly in local markets, village commerce, transportation fares, and small retail purchases. The obverse bears the crowned portrait of George VI, who became Emperor of India following the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936, symbolizing the continued authority of the British Crown over the Indian subcontinent. Struck in bronze at major colonial mints including Calcutta and Bombay, the coin reflects the mature and highly organized monetary system of the British Raj during the late colonial period. These coins circulated through an era marked by the Second World War, economic challenges, and the growing Indian independence movement. After independence in 1947 and the transition toward a sovereign Republic, British imperial coinage was gradually replaced by new national issues. Today, the George VI Half Pice remains a historically significant collectible, representing the closing chapter of British India’s colonial currency system and the final years of imperial rule.
