Mahmud Shah I was one of the most important rulers of the Malwa Sultanate and a major figure of central Indian Islamic history during the 15th century. Belonging to the Khalji Dynasty of Malwa, he strengthened the independence and military power of the sultanate while ruling from Mandu, one of the great fortified capitals of medieval India. His reign saw political expansion, architectural patronage, and increased regional trade across central India. The title “Shadiabad” used on his coinage referred to the royal city of Mandu, celebrated for its prosperity and grandeur. Malwa under Mahmud Shah became an important cultural and economic center connecting northern and western India. Coins from his reign are historically significant for their elegant Arabic inscriptions and their role in illustrating the independent monetary traditions of regional Sultanate kingdoms.
The billon Tankas of Mahmud Shah I were struck in large quantities at Hazrat Shadiabad and formed the backbone of the Malwa Sultanate monetary system. These hammered coins generally carried bold Arabic legends emphasizing royal authority and Islamic legitimacy. Variations in calligraphy, flan size, and date arrangement are common, making the series highly collectible among specialists of medieval Indian Sultanate coinage.
