Issued during the early decades of the Republic of India, the 3 Paise aluminium coin (1964–1971) represents an innovative phase in the country’s decimal coinage system. Following the 1957 decimalisation reform, where 100 Paise equaled one Rupee, India introduced multiple low-denomination coins to support everyday transactions. To reduce minting costs and improve practicality, aluminium was adopted as the primary metal, replacing heavier and more expensive materials. The 3 Paise coin stands out due to its unique hexagonal/triangular form with rounded edges, making it easily distinguishable from other denominations in circulation. This design helped users quickly identify the coin in daily use, especially in busy market environments. Widely circulated during the 1960s, it played an important role in facilitating small-value exchanges across the country. However, with rising inflation over time, such low denominations gradually lost their purchasing power and were eventually withdrawn from circulation, leaving behind a distinctive and collectible example of India’s experimental coin design era.
