2 Paisa Coin Republic of India (Aluminium Metal)

Issued during the early decades of the Republic of India, the 2 Paise aluminium coin (1964–1971) reflects the country’s effort to modernize and rationalize its coinage system after the introduction of decimal currency in 1957. With 100 Paise equaling one Rupee, smaller denominations became essential for everyday transactions, especially in local markets and rural economies. To reduce production costs, aluminium was adopted as the preferred metal, replacing heavier and more expensive materials used earlier. This allowed large-scale minting while ensuring coins remained lightweight and practical. The square shape with rounded corners made it easily distinguishable from other denominations, helping the public quickly adapt to the new decimal system. Widely circulated during the 1960s, this coin played an important role in low-value exchanges. However, increasing inflation gradually reduced its purchasing power, leading to its withdrawal from circulation. Today, it remains a simple yet historically meaningful representation of India’s transition toward an efficient and modern monetary system.
