The 1 Escudo coin of Portuguese India belongs to the final phase of Portuguese colonial rule in India, issued during 1958–1959 under the Estado da India administration. Struck in nickel brass, it was part of the decimal escudo currency system introduced in Portuguese territories. The obverse reflects the colonial identity with “Estado da India,” while the reverse represents Portuguese sovereignty under the republican government. These coins circulated briefly before the annexation of Goa by India in 1961, after which Portuguese coinage lost relevance. The coin was officially demonetized in 1962, marking the end of Portuguese monetary presence in India.
