Sikandar Lodi ruled the Delhi Sultanate from 1489 to 1517 CE and was the second and most capable ruler of the Lodi dynasty, succeeding his father Bahlul Lodi. His reign marked a period of consolidation and expansion for the Sultanate after years of political instability. Sikandar Lodi successfully brought several important regions under Delhi’s control, including Dholpur, Gwalior, Chanderi, and parts of Bundelkhand, strengthening the authority of the Lodi state in northern India.
He also maintained diplomatic relations with neighboring powers and concluded a treaty with Alauddin Hussain Shah of Bengal, which helped stabilize the eastern frontier of the Sultanate. Under his rule, the empire extended from Punjab in the west to the borders of Bengal in the east, covering a large part of northern India. In 1503 CE, Sikandar Lodi founded the city of Agra, which later became one of the most important political and commercial centers of North India and was further developed under the Mughal emperors.
Sikandar Lodi was known not only as a capable military commander but also as an able administrator and patron of learning. He encouraged scholars, poets, and religious institutions while also maintaining a strong centralized administration. Coins issued during his reign, such as this billon tanka, reflect the monetary traditions of the late Delhi Sultanate, featuring elegant Arabic inscriptions naming the Sultan and invoking the authority of the Caliphate. These coins circulated widely across northern India and represent the final flourishing phase of the Sultanate before the rise of the Mughal Empire in the early 16th century.
