The copper Kasu of Muthu Virappa Nayaka belongs to the formative phase of the Madurai Nayak kingdom, a successor state of the collapsing Vijayanagara Empire in southern Tamil Nadu. After the battle of Talikota in 1565, the Nayaks of Madurai emerged as de facto rulers, combining Telugu warrior traditions with Tamil temple culture. Muthu Virappa Nayaka strengthened the capital at Madurai, patronized the Meenakshi–Sundareswarar complex, and expanded control over the Vaigai plains, trade routes to the Coromandel Coast, and pilgrim corridors to Rameswaram. His coinage reflects this synthesis: the standing Garuda—Vishnu’s royal eagle—symbolized divine sanction, legitimacy, and military vigilance, while the brief legend ‘Sri Vira’ proclaimed royal valor. The small module Kasu circulated widely in village markets, temple donations, and long-distance bullion payments, linking agrarian taxation with maritime commerce. This issue marks a critical moment in Nayak statecraft and coinage.
