Jahandar Shah, the 9th Mughal emperor, ruled the Mughal Empire from 1712 to 1713 CE (AH 1124). He was the son of Bahadur Shah I and succeeded him after a brutal war of succession among his brothers. His reign was short and politically fragile, with real power largely in the hands of his powerful wazir Zulfiqar Khan. The empire under him was already in decline—provincial governors in Bengal, Deccan, Awadh, and Hyderabad acted increasingly independently, while the imperial court in Delhi (his capital) remained divided and factional. His known son was Aziz-ud-Din Mirza, who later remained involved in Mughal court politics. Jahandar Shah could control Delhi and nearby core regions, but his authority over distant provinces was weak and largely symbolic. The Itawa mint, under the Agra Subah, continued striking imperial silver in his name, showing that key mints still acknowledged his sovereignty. In 1713 CE he was defeated and executed by his nephew Farrukhsiyar. His grave today lies near the shrine of Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki at Mehrauli, Delhi.
This RY Ahad silver rupee of AH 1124 from Itawa mint is a very rare first-year issue of Jahandar Shah. The elegant Persian couplet “Dar aafaq zad sikka chun mehr-o-mah” proclaims imperial legitimacy at a moment of political crisis. At 11.41 g and 24.31 mm, the piece shows full legends, clear mint-name, and sharp strike—grading About Extremely Fine, making it highly desirable for advanced Mughal collectors.
