Constans was a Roman emperor of the Constantinian dynasty, ruling from c. 337 to 350 CE. He was the youngest son of Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor of Rome and founder of the Constantinian imperial line. After Constantine’s death, the empire was divided among his three sons—Constantine II, Constantius II, and Constans. Following the death of Constantine II in a military conflict in 340 CE, Constans gained control over the western provinces of the Roman Empire. His reign was marked by military campaigns to secure borders and internal stability, but growing opposition eventually led to rebellion. In 350 CE, he was overthrown and killed during the revolt of Magnentius.
This bronze centenionalis reflects the military ideology of his reign, emphasizing the strength, unity, and loyalty of the Roman army during a politically unstable period.
