Kushan Empire, Ruler: Vima Takto (Soter Megas), Period: Circa. 80–90 CE, Denomination: AE Tetradrachm, Metal: Copper, Weight: 8.30 grams, Diameter: 20 mm, Reference: Senior B17.1vT, About Very Fine, Very Scarce.
Obverse: Radiate and diademed bust of Vima Takto facing right, holding a scepter; royal tamgha placed to the left.
Reverse: Mounted king with Greek royal headband, holding a sceptre. Three-pronged tamgha; corrupted Greek legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΩΝ ΣΩΤΗΡ ΜΕΓΑΣ “Basileu Basileuon Soter Megas”: “The King of Kings, Great Saviour”.
This copper tetradrachm was issued during the early expansion phase of the Kushan Empire under Vima Takto, also known by the title Soter Megas (“Great Saviour”). His reign marks a transitional period between nomadic Central Asian traditions and established imperial authority in northern India. The strong equestrian imagery, royal tamgha symbols, and weaponry on this coin emphasize military power and legitimacy, reflecting the Kushans’ consolidation of control over key trade routes. Such early Kushan copper tetradrachms are historically important and comparatively scarce, especially in well-preserved condition.
