Description
Mughal Empire, Jalal ud-Din Muhammad Akbar, (AH 963-1014, 1556-1605 CE), Denomination: 1 Rupee, Composition: Silver, Weight: 11.32 grams, Diameter: 24 mm, Dar-ul-Khilafat Agra mint, 979 AH, Reference: KM 80.1, About Very Fine, Scarce.
Obverse: Kalima Shahada within a central square, surrounded by the names of the four Rightly Guided Caliphs; clear and well-executed religious legend.
Reverse: Mint and date legend in Persian, reading “Zarb Dar-ul-Khilafat Agra” with the Hijri year AH 979, neatly engraved in elegant calligraphy.
Silver rupees of Akbar struck at the Dar-ul-Khilafat Agra mint represent the high standardization and monetary discipline of the Mughal Empire during the mid-16th century. Weighing around 11.2–11.4 grams, these coins followed a consistent silver standard that helped stabilize imperial commerce across North India. The Kalima type belongs to Akbar’s earlier Islamic phase, prior to the introduction of Ilahi-era legends, and reflects the continuation of traditional Sunni symbolism in state coinage. Agra, being the imperial capital and principal mint, produced some of the most prestigious Mughal silver issues, making dated examples like AH 979 both historically significant and highly desirable among collectors.
