Silver rupees of Akbar struck at the Dar-ul-Khilafat Agra mint represent the high standardization and monetary discipline of the Mughal Empire during the mid-16th century. Weighing around 11.2–11.4 grams, these coins followed a consistent silver standard that helped stabilize imperial commerce across North India. The Kalima type belongs to Akbar’s earlier Islamic phase, prior to the introduction of Ilahi-era legends, and reflects the continuation of traditional Sunni symbolism in state coinage. Agra, being the imperial capital and principal mint, produced some of the most prestigious Mughal silver issues, making dated examples like AH 979 both historically significant and highly desirable among collectors.
